Why Band?
There are so many wonderful reasons to band! Having the skill to perform on a musical instrument has been one of the most cherished accomplishments throughout history. Students who decide to learn to to play an instrument can use this skill and knowledge for the rest of their lives. There is nothing like the joy of performing music with friends. It happens every day in school groups and continues for adults who still to play in community bands or for those who perform professionally. In all cases, performing music can be an exhilarating experience.
Aside from the obvious benefits of playing a music instrument, there are a number of surprising academic benefits to students who study music. Students who take lessons on an instrument at a young age stimulate the brain in a unique way. Studies have shown that learning to play an instrument enhances a student's academic performance in math, language arts, foreign language and other academic areas. Even standardized test scores such as the SAT are higher among musicians.
Whatever the reason, playing an instrument can bring joy and fulfillment like no other activity. The most common remark from parents following a wonderful school concert is, “I wish my parents would have encouraged me to play an instrument and stick with it.”
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I join?
Fill out the interest form!
How do I choose which instrument to play?
Watch the video demonstrations below that show you each instrument and when you fill out your interest form, you will pick the top 3 instruments that interest you.
What instruments are started?
Beginners are started on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. We will help you choose the instrument that is best for you at our instrument screening in the fall and selection nights in the first week of school.
What if I don't have an instrument?
Not a problem! We will be doing instrument fittings in the fall, so you will not need to worry about getting an instrument until then. (Unless you already own an instrument, please do not buy one until you/your child receive confirm of which instrument they will play.)
When does the band class meet?
Beginning band meets as a regular class for 40 minutes per day for the entire school year. During 5th and 6th grade, the classes are split between brass/percussion, and woodwinds. We do this to increase the amount of 1 on 1 support for our beginner players. Skills develop slowly at first, so students and parents must be patient and committed for the entire school year in order to get the full benefit of band instruction.
Can I join band in 6th Grade?
While it is possible, it is strongly recommended that students join in 5th grade so that they are not behind their classmates in their musical education.
Are certain instruments for girls and others for boys?
Definitely NOT! Instrument choices are not on a student's gender, but rather their desire to play that instrument. Instrument selection is based primarily upon the facial characteristics of the student, and, most importantly, their personal choice.
Is any previous musical training necessary?
No. The method books used in beginner band are for the musically untrained student. We teach the fundamentals of reading music as well as the fundamentals of playing an instrument. As students progress, you will be able to recognize familiar tunes. Their progress culminates in a in several concerts throughout the year.
Can my child be successful even if I don't have musical talent?
Music psychologists have tried for many years to determine whether heredity or environment has the greatest influence on musicality. Interestingly, both sides use the same data to support their arguments. The most important requirement for success is the desire to succeed.
Can my child participate in both athletics and band at the same time?
YES. There are many middle school students who are in band, athletics, and other organizations. Because of the unique nature of playing a musical instrument, we try to encourage students to begin band in 5th grade. In 5th grade through 12th grade, the school administration, coaches, classroom teachers and music directors work together to try to avoid conflicts in scheduling. We have many current band members who are also in sports.
What does the commitment look like outside of school?
Since band is considered a co-curricular activity, there are aspects both during school and outside of school. Each grade level has about 2-3 concerts per year, which take place in the evening.
